Overview

Ten tastings from Nishiki Market's four hundred years of stalls, then across the river into Gion for obanzai and sake as the lanterns come on.

Nishiki Market is 400 metres of covered market that has fed Kyoto since the 14th century. Your guide walks it at the hour the stalls discount and the locals shop, with ten tastings: pickles, yuba, tako-tamago, fresh soy doughnut, knife-cut sashimi and matcha warabi mochi.

The walk then crosses the Kamo river into Gion for obanzai — Kyoto's home-style small plates — at a counter restaurant, with two local sakes. The timing is deliberate: you reach Hanamikoji as the lanterns come on, which is when geiko and maiko move between engagements.
